The European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) “Accelerated Digitalisation for SMEs in the North Central Region”, established within the Regional Innovation Center “Ambitious Gabrovo”, has implemented an environmental digital twin solution in Tryavna Municipality.
Four monitoring stations – in the Bozhkovtsi neighbourhood, at Prof. P. N. Raykov Primary School, in the town of Plachkovtsi, and at the building of Tryavna Municipality – are now providing real-time data, which residents can access through the municipality’s official website:

A digital twin is a virtual representation of the environmental conditions at a specific location, continuously updated using sensor data. Each of the four monitoring stations measures fine particulate matter PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. The measurements are summarised in an Air Quality Index on a scale from 0 to 100, accompanied by a clear description of the pollution level and recommendations regarding outdoor activities.
The solution also stores measurement history for the past 24 hours and 30 days, presenting the data through charts and tables, including minimum, average, and maximum values. The information is updated automatically every 60 seconds.
The solution has been integrated directly into the municipality’s website as an open web component, without the need for external platforms or applications. This enables any public administration to embed its own digital twin into its existing website with minimal effort.
“The environmental digital twin is the first step towards data-driven municipal management. When a public administration can see in real time what is happening across different neighbourhoods, it can make decisions related to heating, transport, and the urban environment based on facts rather than assumptions,” the EDIH team commented.
The implementation is part of the EDIH services in the field of “Testing and Experimentation” (Test Before Invest), which enable public organisations and small and medium-sized enterprises in Bulgaria’s North Central Region to test digital and AI-based solutions before investing in them.
The Hub also offers municipalities across the region the opportunity to implement similar solutions – ranging from environmental monitoring and AI assistants for citizens to advanced data analysis.
